As Fred Funk tells it, disaster lies just behind every tree, over each mound and near each creek at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel, site of this week's Kemper Open. He should know. Funk-Takoma Park native, former golf coach at the University of Maryland and an 11-year veteran of the PGA Tour-led the 1998 Kemper Open for three rounds before a closing 77 left him tied for third.
"Avenel is one of the courses ... it has a lot of subtleties to it and not so subtle things to it," Funk said. "But if you hit away from trouble, you end up putting yourself in more trouble a lot of times. You've just got to pull off the shot you need to hit on that particular hole."
The Washington Post called on Funk's experience in playing at Avenel this week will be his 14th Kemper Open to give readers an insider's guide to the golf course.
